TechWave 2012 announced

Not sure when the announcement was made, I just happened to hit the TechWave web site and notice it. As was done for TechWave 2011, TechWave 2012 will be colocated with SAP TechEd at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year the conference will be held October 15th to 19th (a month later than last year’s). Mark your calendars now and keep looking for the call for papers.

OpenPlug, we hardly knew you…

It’s a tool I was looking at for a while that allowed you to develop in Flex and then cross compile for a number of mobile platforms, including iOS and Android. The company that makes it just announced that they are suspending work on it and reassigning all their employees involved in project to other products. The ability of Flex itself to compile for Air on those platforms (beginning with 4.5.1) probably didn’t help the long term prospects for the product. The timing though, coming almost exactly a month after Adobe’s announcement that they were turning Flex over to open source. leads me to believe that it was that announcement that finally sealed the coffin on it.

Kind of the typical response to Adobe’s announcement. The LA Flex User Group decided to rename themselves the LA Enterprise Application Developer’s group and are looking at a number of different products. While the San Diego group took a similar, though not quite so dramatic, action as well.

Dave Fish started it off by discussing the new features of 12.5 and demoing a few of them.

Sue Dunell then talked about what was going with PowerBuilder, including a lot of the interest/involvement from SAP.

With regard to PB15, the tentative road map showed:

Web (partial)
Cloud
Refactoring support
Win32 UI enhancements
.Net Framework updates
64 bit deploy – Classic
OData Support

With regard to a full fledged web solution, she referenced the work that Appeon is doing towards HTML5 and mobile client support.

Dave then demos some ‘pre-alpha’ work on PB 15. He did mention that there will be a 12.5.1 MR that involves 2 enhancements for the PB.Net version.

The ability to dynamically load assemblies
64 bit compilation support

The PB15 features he supported were:

MDIDock – a bot of a minomer because its not MDI
Grid and GridSplitter control
Adding controls to toolbars
Sharing .Net DataSets with DataWindows
HTLM5 DataWindow – InfoMaker.Net. Reporting and simple data entry
